Social Rowing

What to expect at social rowing

If row, row, rowing gently down the stream really appeals to you, you could join the recreational rowing group.

This group meets once a week to enjoy rowing in a social environment. Participation is casual, so if you need to go away for work or have family commitments, you don't need to attend every week. Most people get hooked fairly quickly though, and we have many regular faces. The vast majority of this crew joins through the community "learn to row" or the "corporate challenge course", but new participants can be integrated any time during the year. Recreational rowers form an active part of the club community and social events such as BBQs, quiz nights and so on are often held to enable all club members to mix.

Times  -  Currently, the Club has social rowing session per week and that is on Saturday Mornings.

Arrive by 6.15am for crew allocation and on to the water by 6.30am
We are usually back by 7.30am for a well deserved coffee upstairs.

During this session, a volunteer supervisor will take you for the row. They may cox you, instruct a learner cox or depending on numbers row with you or follow in a dinghy. Other more experienced rowers will also participate to help coach or just to fill up the boat.  The course and distance you row will be dependent on weather conditions, crew skill and strength, and your departure time.

What's expected of me?

You are expected to help prepare the boat and equipment for rowing, including but not limited to:

moving the dinghies, setting up the trestles, getting oars for yourself and possibly others, carrying the boat, washing down the equipment including boats and oars upon return, and packing up the shed.

Who will I row with?

This varies, as the number of participants varies so does the experience of the social rowing people.

What type of rowing will it be, sculling or sweep oar?

Configurations are flexible, generally a supervisor will try to put the entire group in one or two boats as its easier to supervise so the number of participants is usually the deciding factor. Some numbers can be used in either boat such as Quads / Fours. At times multiple boats may go out depending on numbers and crew experience.

Why might social rowing be cancelled?

Social rowing will usually only be cancelled due to weather (extreme wind or lightning). The number of registrations usually won't affect whether or not social rowing takes place, as configurations can be flexible and a supervisor can invite other club members to a session to make up good numbers.

Will I get coached during social rowing?

At "social rowing" your technique will be critiqued as far as to help the whole crew get better, it is not individual coaching but the supervisor should take you through some drills while having breaks or if the crew is struggling to get a good row. The supervisor will always take you through a warm up and you can ask for help or instruction on particular parts of your stroke. The supervisor's main priority is your safety and they will focus on this above all else.

How do I nominate for social rowing?

Just come along and boats and crews will be sorted on the day.
